Empowering Sustainability Leadership

Community Recycling Project in Surabaya, Indonesia
The Faculty of Economics and Islamic Business (FEBI) at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya (UINSA), in partnership with Circular Economics Singapore, implemented a community-based waste management initiative in 2023 in Kelurahan Jemur Wonosari, Wonocolo District. The program focused on promoting sustainable lifestyles through the Waste Bank and Ecobrick Empowerment Program. By integrating Sharia-based waste bank models with eco-innovation practices, the initiative encouraged residents to sort, recycle, and generate economic value from household waste while fostering ethical and environmentally responsible consumption. Guided by the principles of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and the 3R approach—reduce, reuse, and recycle—the program demonstrated that ecological awareness can lead to social and economic empowerment. This collaboration reflects a shared vision of sustainable development that balances environmental care with community welfare. The UINSA and Circular Economics partnership is expected to expand through additional pilot projects across Surabaya, supporting Indonesia’s national goals for low-carbon development and sustainable community development.
