Action Research for SDG Localisation in Bangladesh (Programs 3 & 4)
This capacity-building programme supported Bangladeshi government officials in integrating the sustainability principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into public policy and development practice. Recognising officials’ central role in national development, the programme strengthened their ability to conceptualise and localise SDGs within existing policies. Delivered in collaboration with Curtin University and led by Professor Dora Marinova, the Australia-based academic component included core and elective seminars, case studies, field visits, and action research workshops. Core modules covered sustainability concepts and measurement, SDG localisation methodologies, and Bangladesh’s sustainability challenges, while electives addressed governance, waste management, planetary health, women’s participation, green growth, energy transition, sustainable transport, urban development, wetlands restoration, and climate action. Field visits across Western Australia showcased practical sustainability initiatives. Following the academic phase, 38 public servants from multiple ministries implemented nine location-based action research projects in Bangladesh, using bottom-up approaches to embed SDGs in policy implementation and contribute to evidence-based policy reform.
These projects will be published as a “SDG Localisation Casebook”. The link of the publication will be provided here and under publication section.
